From 1933 until 1955 Rolex produced their revolutionary selfwinding watch, the Oyster Perpetual, with a distinct case shape affectionately adorned by collectors the ‘Bubbleback’. Manufacturing a self-winding calibre required extra space due to the addition of a rotor. As opposed to making their cases thicker, Rolex opted to give their casebacks extra depth – thus resulting in a rounded, or ‘Bubbleback’ shape.

This exceptional 5050 reference dates back to the 1940s, featuring a 32mm 14 carat gold case with a beautifully aged dial with preserved lume on the Arabic indexes. Its arcylic crystal offers more depth to the watch, which incorporated Rolex’s patented Oyster case – one of the most advanced technologies of the time, resisting ingress of water or dust.
