A life well lived… and quite possibly a life lived in the sunshine.
There are vintage watches with beautiful dials, and then there are watches whose dials tell a story.
This 1965 Omega Constellation in 18ct gold has one of the most remarkable natural “tropical” dials we have encountered. Years of exposure to light have transformed the original dial into something completely individual, with a wonderfully warm and characterful patina that simply cannot be recreated.
You can’t help but wonder where it has been.
Perhaps it spent its early years somewhere warm and glamorous — a Mediterranean summer, a villa on the Côte d’Azur, or long afternoons behind the wheel of a favourite convertible. We rather like to imagine the owner in 1965, sleeve rolled up, the golden case catching the sunlight as they drove along a coastal road.
And what car would have suited it?
Perhaps a Jaguar E-Type, already an icon of 1960s motoring and particularly at home in the sunshine. Or an Alfa Romeo Spider, a Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda, an Aston Martin DB5 or even a Porsche 356. The sort of cars where arriving was almost as important as the destination.
Of course, we will never know the real story — and that is part of the charm.
Beneath that wonderfully aged dial is something considerably less mysterious: Omega’s legendary Calibre 561.
The 24-jewel automatic Calibre 561 was introduced at the end of the 1950s and became one of Omega’s most highly regarded movements of the era. Importantly, in Constellation form it was officially certified as a chronometer, reflecting the exceptional standards of precision expected from Omega’s flagship watch.
The movement in this watch is in particularly good condition, making the contrast rather wonderful: an exterior that carries the beautiful evidence of decades of life, combined with a movement that remains a superb example of Omega’s engineering excellence.
In 1965, the Constellation represented the sophisticated end of Omega’s range — a serious precision timepiece presented here in luxurious 18ct gold.
When this watch was made, the world was changing rapidly.
The Beatles were dominating the charts, James Bond had just appeared on screen in Thunderball, Concorde was still being developed, and the Space Race was gathering pace. In Britain, the Mini was transforming everyday motoring while the Jaguar E-Type represented something altogether more glamorous.
It was an era of optimism, design, fast cars and international travel.
And somewhere in that world, this Omega Constellation began its own journey.
Today, its natural tropical dial, beautifully preserved 18ct gold case and superb Calibre 561 provide a fascinating combination of history, character and horological quality.
