A superb example of the distinctive Rolex Air-King reference 116900, dating from 2021 and supplied with its original Rolex box and papers.
The 116900 is a particularly interesting modern Air-King, combining Rolex’s traditional aviation heritage with a bold and contemporary design. Introduced with a larger 40mm Oystersteel case, the reference features an unmistakable black dial with prominent 3, 6 and 9 Arabic numerals alongside a detailed minutes scale. The design was inspired in part by the Bloodhound SSC land-speed record project, giving this generation of Air-King a character unlike almost any other Rolex.
The black dial is complemented by highly legible Chromalight hands and hour markers, producing Rolex’s distinctive long-lasting blue luminescence in low-light conditions. The combination of green accents, contrasting white markings and the bright yellow Rolex crown gives the dial its instantly recognisable appearance.
At the heart of the watch is the Rolex Calibre 3131, a self-winding mechanical movement incorporating an anti-magnetic shield to help protect the movement from magnetic fields. The movement offers approximately 48 hours of power reserve and is certified as a Superlative Chronometer.
The 40mm Oystersteel case features a smooth bezel, screw-down winding crown and screw-down case back, together with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, making the Air-King an exceptionally practical everyday sports watch.
The watch is fitted with its original Rolex Oyster bracelet, featuring the Oysterclasp and Easylink comfort extension system.
This example is supplied with its original Rolex box and papers, providing an excellent complete package for the collector or enthusiast. 2021 examples of the 116900 are commonly offered with their original Rolex warranty card, presentation box, booklets and associated accessories.
The reference 116900 was subsequently discontinued in 2022, making the 2021 example part of the final production period of this distinctive generation of Air-King.
The Air-King has a long association with Rolex’s aviation heritage, with the name appearing on Rolex watches since the 1950s. The 116900 takes that heritage in a distinctly modern direction.
Its unusual dial, 40mm case and combination of aviation-style minute markings with the traditional 3-6-9 configuration make it one of the most distinctive Rolex sports models of its generation.
